For instance, it does seem to have been able to function as a royal force, giving the early Merovingian realm an effective coercive force.
Anyway, the francisca is actually perfectly compatible with what you're saying, because actually the francisca is never actually associated with Franks outside the Roman Empire, before their settlement in Gaul. Its distribution is essentially northern Gallic and I have suggested that it is in fact a late imperial weapon used by Franks (and others) in the 5th-century Roman army (a cheap but effective throwing weapon). What would be nice would be troops in Roman garb but with top-knots. After all Sidonius describes the top-knot in fifth-century Gaul, and it might have been a part of showing your identity as a Frank within the army.Historian on the Edgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14069934072719158780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320864256796636349.post-29189013098558447252011-10-27T13:43:04.832-04:002011-10-27T13:43:04.832-04:00I loved U2 Danger at Dunwater - lots of good repla...I loved U2 Danger at Dunwater - lots of good replay value. Sounds like a good series to convert. Love to hear how it turns out.

As for Pathfinder power levels, I do agree. I think its part of the attempt to maintain what I think is the great mid-level experience - the heroes are tough enough to take on some bigger challenges, but not so tough that orcs and goblins can be scoffed at all the time.

On a side note, I kind of thought Pathfinder #2 made a nod towards U1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, at least in the creepy locale department.Paul Leachhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05653564587101703496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320864256796636349.post-77608358533782171832011-10-27T05:12:52.657-04:002011-10-27T05:12:52.657-04:00I have been thinking of converting the old U serie...I have been thinking of converting the old U series of modules for use with Pathfinder, although these are for levels 1-3. My experience of the power level of Pathfinder PCs, however, is that they much more dangerous than their old AD&D equivalents. Hence, some kind of buffing of the opposition will be needed.Stuarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01863160473105489597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320864256796636349.post-10999989448560982332011-09-24T00:46:21.406-04:002011-09-24T00:46:21.406-04:00Very nice - I have added this to my blog list. I mentioned them in the blog I only keep in my head, but forgot to note them here.

I definitely think there's a place for units like this in tabletop campaigns of the period. I'm guessing that most rulesets dealing with medieval Japanese lists probably make some allowance for them in one way or another (command and control or morale limitations - again, just guessing). However,I do like the expensive and temporary nature given to them in Shogun/Samurai Swords/Ikusa - and I think with a little tweaking the army lists could be adjusted to do the same for homebrew campaigns.Paul Leachhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05653564587101703496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320864256796636349.post-45978770425417900092011-09-01T06:08:30.856-04:002011-09-01T06:08:30.856-04:00Don't forget the use of ronin. Not just a climb-test either, I imagine, but a chance of taking serious casualties too (broken glass, collapsing walls, rubble 'avalanches', etc) especially if under artillery or mortar fire as well. In one of the Osprey WWII tactics volumes, there's an illustration of a veritable defensive wall made of rubble constructed (by bulldozers I imagine) by the Germans across an Italian town.
The new Airfix resin ruined buildings are really nice, by the way - but piles of rubble are needed to complete them. I have made my own mix of materials in a PVA adhesive to pile up stacks of rubble.Historian on the Edgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14069934072719158780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8320864256796636349.post-21119951509135662162011-08-09T06:55:32.953-04:002011-08-09T06:55:32.953-04:00I couldn't agree more.
